Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
I love Chappell Roan's music and listen to it everyday. Her music has impacted me in a very positive way. I am a member of the LGBTQ community and seeing a fellow member succeed as well as Chappell Roan has is extremely inspiring. Coming out and being open about yourself is not easy. I don't think many people understand that when you come out it feels like a spotlight is shining on you, sometimes in a negative way. I remember coming out to my family and being told not to tell certain family members because of how they would react. Seeing Chappell Roan be open to the entire world despite the issues in the world is relieving and inspiring. I love how she touches on this in "Good Luck Babe" as she talks about being open while in a relationship with someone who isn't ready. I think she is so real and raw that it is shining a new light on the LGBTQ community. Having huge hits like HOTTOGO have really impacted the global view of LGBTQ public figures. I would also like to bring up how she is so strong. When she sees injustice or something wrong in her life, she faces it head on. She is not afraid to scream and shout her beliefs. I think that is so amazing. I can't wait to see what she does next as she is doing so well. Go Chappell Roan!!
Disney Channel Rewind Scholarship
There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation and school comes along just to end it. So the annual problem of our generation is finding a good way to spend it. Like maybe... Applying for this scholarship!
I have always been a HUGE Disney fan and have watched Disney Channel shows growing up. Though I started this essay with Phineas and Ferb, the shows I would love a crossover of would definitely be 'Liv and Maddie' crossed with 'Good Luck Charlie' because of how fun those two families would be if put in a room together. The episode would have to be called "Good Luck-a-Rooney?" This would have to be the title because every episode of 'Liv and Maddie' ends with "a-rooney" So it would be a crossover of the two shows and keeping a tradition! The episode should start with both families going on vacation to Disneyworld and running into each other. Gabe and Parker become instant friends wreaking little brother havoc on the theme park. Liv, Maddie, and Teddie also become instant friends sharing their eldest sister's experiences and this would lead to PJ and Joey bonding over being the eldest brothers. Charlie and little Toby are still young and stay with their parents who are all too happy to take care of the little ones. The episode needs to have the traditional Disney family drama and then a bonding experience. Naturally, the new groups of sibling friends split off into the multiple realms of the Disneyworld parks because they cannot all decide where to go. Parker and Gabe head off to EPCOT where they ride "Test-Track" over and over again building new cars to race. The twins and Teddie go to Hollywood studios where they enjoy all things Hollywood and Movie themed. PJ and Joey follow the girls but split off to go into "Galaxy's Edge" and enjoy building lightsabers and droids. The parents and young kids stay in Magic Kingdom and dive into the world of Mickey Mouse and Princesses. Everyone seems to be having a fun day with their new friends but one thing is missing, quality family time. They have like the time they spent doing the things they enjoy but they realize they have missed out on what really counts: family. At the end of the day they decide to all find each other at Disney Springs and apologize for their actions before. They tell each other how much they missed being together. Due to perfect Disney magic, they all decide to go to Magic Kingdom the next day. This cuts to an amazing montage of the two families exploring Disney World together. The montage would be a banger mash-up of "Hang in There Baby" and "Better Disney is all about the family bonding experience and not only would this be a fun episode to watch, but it would entice people to book a trip to the parks. It would be a great money maker for Disney and a great episode for the fans. So to sum up, these two shows are truly "Better in Stereo" but "Hang in There Baby" because it's going to be a wild ride!
VNutrition & Wellness’ Annual LGBTQ+ Vitality Scholarship
Every day it is essential to learn something new. Being in high school or college can make that task very easy. I believe education is a weapon and no one can ever disarm someone who is educated. People make an impact every day by using their education. This education can come from society around them, schooling, family, friends, and so many more places. For me, I plan to use my college education to make an impact on the world. It is my dream to become the President of the United States and I can not do that if I do not educate myself after high school. I plan to change the world by expanding our education system here in the US. I think the best way to push society forward is with learning. I also plan on helping to save our environment. There will be no future or society if we do not have a place to live. These are just a few examples of what I plan to do when I one day reach my goal. However, I can not reach this goal if I do not educate myself. I plan to major in Political Science so I learn the interworkings of the US Government. With this education, I will know what and who to know. I believe making a difference in society is essential and it always starts with education. If no one learned about an issue, no one would stand up to fight it. The environment, education system, safety of marginalized groups, economy, and so much more are at risk if no one stands up to do something about it. I believe I can be the person to help find meaningful solutions. I have always greatly enjoyed learning. From pre-school to now being a High School Senior, I have always loved to learn. I can not imagine not having the opportunities that I did growing up. In some areas of this country and the world, people do not have access to education. This has inspired me and continues to inspire me every day to go to school and get an education. I know that I would not be the person I am today or the person I will be in the future if I was unable to receive the education I have gotten. I will use my education to make a positive impact because I have to for the sake of the world. We must encourage everyone to do the same and wield the weapon they have been given in receiving an education and use it for good and the progression of our world.
Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
Anxiety has always been part of my life and always will be. I learned to accept the fact that it will never just 'poof' and go away. As much as I hope and dream that one day it will rid my body of this burden, it will not. When I was a very little kid I was diagnosed with anxiety. I would often have breakdowns and panic attacks that became uncontrollable. My parents decided to put me in martial arts. This is where the social aspect of my anxiety showed its true colors. Whenever the instructor would ask me to do something, I said "no." I was not going to listen or talk to a guy I don't know! Why would I do anything in front of people? But with time came familiarity, and with familiarity came comfort. Now, twelve years later I am a third degree blackbelt and a Junior Instructor. Writing that made it sound so easy but trust me, it was not. Throughout my life I have worked to find my 'brave face' and how I could fake it until I made it. Public speaking was not my thing and it seemed like my anxiety followed me wherever I went. It was always there, looming in the background telling me how everyone was staring at me and thinking I was a fool. However, when I got to high school it was a fresh start. I was determined to make a difference. I went into high school right after being virtual for a year. I hadn't seen anyone in real life for over a year. So, though my anxiety wanted me to stay home and walking into class was a battle, I did it. Every day, little by little, I settled in. I always knew I loved politics and law so I wanted to join Model UN at school. My entire Freshman year, I didn't muster up the courage to go to a conference. In my Sophomore year, it took me until the end of the year and the very last conference to finally go. Once I got there, I realized everyone was just like me: nervous, timid, and most importantly, human. After working on it for two years at that point, I finally was able to talk in front of people. I familiarized myself with the uncomfortable. While my public speaking skills are not perfect, over the next year and a half they have greatly improved. I have stepped out of my shell and have even lead entire martial arts classes, moving up the ranks of instructor and making a valuable impact on the younger generation. I have won at Model UN conferences and have even found my voice to make a difference in school. This year I have even earned the title of USG of Model UN and President of the JSA club at school. It took 17 years but I finally have become sort of comfortable with being a member of society. The next step is college and I feel that pursuing a degree is the only way to reach my goals. I one day want to become an elected official because I believe I can make a difference. I can't do this without going to college and truly diving into the interworkings of the US government. I have grown so much and I know anxiety will always be there, but I am not alone. It is estimated that 301 million people worldwide have anxiety. College is not out of reach for them, and I won't let anxiety make it out of reach for me.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
After going back and forth for many years over what I wanted to do with my life, I finally chose the perfect field for me. I always knew I wanted to help people in the future. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a doctor because that was the first thing I thought of when helping people. Then, I wanted to be a teacher because they help people too, and thankfully there is a lot less blood, guts, and needles. But I realized that was just not enough for me. I want to make a global change. So then I decided I must go into politics. This was the perfect field for me. Everything in this world has something to do with politics. Healthcare, political; education, political; business, political! Everything in this world comes back to the government and that is when I knew I had to be a part of it. The ever-changing nature of the world fascinates me and there is nothing I want to do more is make an impact on the whole world. One day I hope to be the president so I can help so many people. I want to change this country for the better. I believe everyone is equal in this life and our laws should reflect that. I want to make our democracy stronger and encourage it. I want to protect all of the citizens of the United States by helping cut the cost of healthcare and education. Further, I want to create stricter gun laws to protect everyone. I need to make a difference for people. And that is why I must go into Politics in the future.
Big Picture Scholarship
One movie that impacted my life the most is "On the Basis of Sex". This movie is about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her journey to becoming one of the most meaningful justices in history. The film starts when she is one of a few women starting to get an education at Harvard. She then moves to Columbia University and her husband gets sick with cancer. She takes on both his work as well as her own and they both graduate and look for jobs in the city. RBG's husband, Marty, has no trouble finding a great job. However, RBG struggles to find a law firm that is willing to hire her because she is a woman. She ends up settling for a job teaching at Rutgers University. The film then takes a turn when RBG discovers a case that discriminates based on sex, but this time the sexism is directed at a man. The film takes the viewer through a thrilling journey of RBG's path to becoming a lawyer for her client, Charlie. She ends up winning the case after delivering one of the best speeches in cinematic history.
This film has impacted me because as a woman, I have been told I can't do certain things. This is extremely untrue. I can do anything I set my mind to. Women are not inferior to men so it makes no sense at all to discriminate in this way. I think this film exemplifies that and tells a very powerful story about one of the most influential people of all time. RBG is truly my superhero. This film shows her fight to become respected in a world where there are fewer opportunities because of her gender. This movie inspired me to reach even further than the stars. My goal is to one day become an elected official and this film showed me I could one day do such a thing. Living in the US can be discouraging when looking at the US political history. Women are often extremely underrepresented. There has never been a woman president. Even in our Congress, there are far more men than women. In the entire existence of the US, there have only been four women to sit on the Supreme Court. After watching this film, I felt inspired to chase my dream of becoming an elected official. RBG showed me women are just as strong, smart, and powerful as men; but only if we choose to see it. No one is going to hand us equality, RBG learned this in the film. But RBG showed me I have to fight for it. Don't just sit and watch, I was inspired to go out and make a difference. After the speech in the court, I felt like I could conquer the world if I wanted to. I also adopted a new attitude toward the world. Instead of just seeing the inequalities and doing nothing, fight for what is right even if I make a mistake, say the wrong thing, or choose the wrong path. Nothing can truly stop women from achieving the goal of equality. I believe everyone should watch this film as it gives a very real experience of being a woman in this world. It also teaches a great lesson of being who you are and always fighting for what's right. RBG is my hero and without her and this film, I might have never realized my full potential.
Bookshelf to Big Screen Scholarship
My most favorite book to movie adaption has to be the Hunger Games. I have and will always say this and die on this hill. I read the Hunger Games in seventh grade and I was absolutely invested. Everyone always says people go through the Hunger Games phase but I started it and never left. The suspense and drama is truly remarkable and I love the series. After reading these amazing books, I watched the movies. The entire time I was watching, I was saying to myself: That is actually what I imagined that looked like! It was truly amazing how well done the movies were in relation to the books. Starting with the first book/movie, I think it was an awesome adaptation. Jennifer Lawrence was absolutely perfect for the role. I also think Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth were the best choices possible for Peeta and Gale. They really brought the roles and the competition of love interests alive. The costumes for the character were exactly how I imagined them and possibly even better. I really love how the movie stayed very true to the book skipping only the tiniest details. The dialogue, setting, and visual effects followed the book very closely. It was amazing seeing one of my favorite books come to life. I actually thought most of the second book was boring. I thought it was a bit drawn out until the end where it got really interesting. I thought the movie actually made the book better because it sped up plot and didn't skip many details. I really liked how the characters showed their growth and as a viewer I could feel the emotions through the screen. I honestly liked the movie better which is honestly very rare for me. Finally I really liked how the last book was split in two. I thought they did a great job capturing the little things and telling the story true to the book. I think the two movies could flow like one movie and honestly they are very powerful. Katniss becoming the "Mockingjay" was amazing to read and just as amazing to watch on screen. I absolutely cried at all of the deaths in the last book and I was skeptical that the movie would capture just how emotional the book was. I was pleasantly surprised how the actors conveyed the emotion. To conclude, I really enjoyed how the movies stayed true to the books and missed only a few details. I recommend the Hunger Games books and movies to anyone and everyone. I feel as though these movies did a remarkable job compared to other movie adaptations such as Harry Potter. Don't get me wrong, I love those movies too but the Hunger Games truly takes the cake with accuracy and delivery.
Netflix and Scholarships!
Dearest Gentle Reader, I would like to tell you about my love for the Bridgerton Series on Netflix. This show is extremely popular and for good reason. The love, drama, and mystery make this show absolutely magical. This show is truly a nail biter and has made pillows go flying trying to urge the characters to make the right choices. The series is based of a book series and it is just too awesome. The first season starts with the eldest sister Daphne and her debut season on the marriage market. The Queen absolutely falls in love with her and proclaims her as the "Diamond of the Social Season." All seems perfectly well but Daphne's eldest brother Antony, is limiting her choices for love. Every suitor she gets, Antony finds something about them that is not suitable for his sister. He eventually agrees to marry her off to the most creepy man in town. Daphne is utterly afraid because she knows her life will be miserable. Then, the Duke comes into town to stir the pot. Daphne and the Duke create a plan. The pretend to fall in love so the men of society try and fight for her. And all of the pesky mama's stop trying to get him married to their daughter. The biggest twist is all of this is outlined in detail by a new gossip writer "Lady Whistledown." People turn to use this as a weapon. Antony is still convinced his creepy suitor is the best but everyone else disagrees. The Bridgerton girls hatch a plan and it works. Without spoiling too much, the creepy suitor is chased out of town. Eventually, the Duke and Daphne truly fall in love and after much drama that I don't want to spoil they get married. The rest of the season follows their life as a married couple. The next season focusses on Antony and his quest for a wife. I truly do not want to spoil for those who have not watched because the amount of mystery and suspense in this season is unmatched by any other show I have ever watched. Every episode brings a new challenge and a plot twist. It is truly remarkable. I am now anxiously awaiting the finally to season three. Season three has been amazing so far. The drama and suspense is almost killing me and I must know what happens! For these reasons, it is absolutely the best show on Netflix and everyone must watch.
Eras Tour Farewell Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift is truly a mastermind and has changed so many lives including my own. I started listening to her music from a young age like most kids. Growing up obviously everyone always played "Blank Space", "Shake it Off", "Love Story", and other super famous songs. But I did not become a true Swiftie until after Taylor Swift started the "Eras Tour." The internet blew up and her music was everywhere. I started to learn the words to her songs and listen to all of her albums. I quickly realized I LOVE the album "Red". "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)(Ten minute version)" is my all time favorite song. I could listen to it every single day. But other than just learning about how much I love Taylor Swift as an artist and person, I have also learned valuable life lessons. Taylor Swifts career has not always been easy and there were many set backs. In my life there have also been heartaches and toxic people who have set me back. Taylor Swift's lyrics helped me realize how much I was putting myself down for toxic people. I have a really bad relationship with my paternal grandmother. There is so much trauma stemming from that relationship. When I listen to "Illicit Affairs" and particularly the part that she sings in the tour about not calling her kid or baby and "look at this idiotic fool that you made me" definitely hit home. I wish I could scream that to my grandmother. She has caused me so much pain and I feel like those lyrics quite literally sum up my feelings. I have also dropped friends because of the lessons of self-worth Swift has taught me. I had a toxic friend who I just really needed to get rid of. I feel like "Look What You Made Me Do" is perfect for this situation. When Taylor Swift sees all the versions of her self in boxes during this song is so perfect. There have been many versions of me and I realized I was locking up who I truly was to fit in. I realized I had to let myself free and just drop this person because of how bad they were for me. Taylor Swift makes herself seem like the most confident person in the world which I hope to one day embody. Her confidence and promotion of self-worth through her music have truly changed my life and have taught me I can stand up for myself and be who I want to be.
1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
So far in 2024, it has been a crazy year! 1989 would definitely be a great album to put this year into words. I am a huge Taylor Swift fan and listen to her everyday and she has literally gotten me through the last year and with her releasing 1989 (Taylor's Version), I have listened non-stop. Here is how I would put 1989 with the months of this year so far:
January- Out of the Woods. 2023 was a rough year. I lost my great grandma, drama with friends, and I had covid twice (I am very scared of germs and even though I had been vaccinated I just got it!) After counting down to midnight, I was so relieved that 2023 is over. I truly felt like I had made it it "Out of the Woods"
February- Shake It Off. In February I went to my first out of state Model UN Conference and that came with some major set backs. There was issues in the committee with some delegates and the days were long. But I really just needed to "Shake it Off" and keep going. Thankfully, it all worked out in the end and I got an award! Later that month, I broke my wrist and I was extremely upset because I was limited in what I could do for weeks. But I had to shake off those negative feelings and find the good in everyday!
March- Bad Blood. I had issues with friends this month and I really think the lyrics "Now we got problems, and I don't think we can solve em." Was embodied by this month. I definitely hope I don't have another Bad Blood month because I am really trying to stay positive after the train wreck that was 2023.
April- Wonderland. I think this song is perfect for April because it represents having fun while being stressed. I did another Model UN conference in April which I ended up getting 2nd place in. After that stressful weekend, the realization of next year is Senior year and I have to actual go to college hit me. I registered for the SAT's, studied hard for AP exams, and researched almost everything I could about every college I was looking at. The lyric "Life was never worse but never better" is so relatable because it is all so exciting to be entering this new chapter but getting to that new chapter is so stressful.
May- You Are in Love. I choose this song because this month my boyfriend promposed to me and it was the cutest thing ever. He made a sign that said "Together Prom will be better than your Wildest Dreams" I could not think of a better way to do this. He even made me a friendship bracelet that said "Prom" on it! He really did his homework on Swiftie culture to pull this off. I felt so loved and happy when he asked me to prom this way. I definitely felt in love during this month! I hope the rest of 2024 feels like "You Are in Love", "Style", or "Wildest Dreams".
To conclude, Taylor Swift is a Mastermind and creates lyrics that even Wonderland could not make up. Because of this she has written some of the most relatable songs I have ever listened to. I can't wait to see what she does next!
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I have understood and have worked to manage my mental health from a very young age. Growing up with anxiety, it has not always been easy to deal with every situation. When I was little, if there was not a schedule, I would flip out. It quite literally felt like the world was ending if there was even the tiniest bit of surprise. My parents took me to my doctor who diagnosed me with anxiety. My doctor also recommended to put me in a very structured sport. So, my parents put me in martial arts. This was probably the best decision they ever made. I had my routine of going to class but every class was different. This helped me deal with everyday, changing life. Throughout the past twelve years, it has been my outlet for stress. This has helped shape my goals because one day I want to help people succeed in life just like martial arts helped me. Society often sees mental health as a burden and something the limits success but dealing with anxiety has taught me the opposite. Even with my anxiety, I have accomplished so much. I am now a martial arts instructor, Model UN Delegate, and outspoken advocate for what's right. My struggle with anxiety has never been easy but I have learned that I can do anything I set my mind to. I remember during the Lockdowns in 2020 really threw me for a loop. I have always been extremely fearful of germs and sickness and so when the entire world became sick, it became my worst nightmare. There were times when I felt like the end of the world was near. I became very reserved and lost a lot of friends because I shut everyone out. I remember my birthday that year and how I was just crying and crying... and crying. I realized that was it. I had to get my life back and take control of my anxiety again. I realized that my relationships were suffering and I was loosing sight of my goals in life. I decided to throw myself into politics because I felt like what was happening in the world could have gone a different way. I threw myself into research which was captivating and started advocating for what I believe in. Today, I now intern in multiple political organizations and plan on majoring in political science in college. I learned to harness my anxiety by putting the energy I spend on worrying into something I love. When I feel stressed I often read articles or watch the news. This has completely changed how I look at the world because something that I have been told is a burden and will hinder my ability to thrive has lead me to so many great things in life. Society looks down on people with anxiety but honestly, I don't understand why. Because of my anxiety I have had the opportunity to become a martial arts instructor, compete nation wide, become an advocate in my community, and learn more about the world we live in. I realized that when I am stressed about something, I need to take the time and research what I can so I can better understand what is happening. I have turned something that was supposed to drag me down into my super power. I have learned to deal with the unknown and the ever changing world by constantly learning. I know I can't control the world but I can control how I react and thanks to my battle with mental health, I have learned to harness those feelings and turn them into something great.
Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could have everyone read one book, I think it would be "The Hate U Give". I think everyone should read this book because it is really revolutionary. It takes the reader through the journey of a girl named Starr as she struggles with the loss of her friend due to police brutality. She learns the power of protest and standing up for what you believe in. Though this book is set in the US, everyone can learn from this. It teaches the power of our actions and how protest can change the world. It teaches about the consequences of actions, good or bad. I think everyone in the world can learn something in this book. Someone can learn the real power behind their words. Most importantly, it teaches acceptance of others that are different than ourselves. Nobody in this world is the same as another person. Sometimes, people forget that and discriminate against those who do not look like them. Learning acceptance and equality is essential to keeping the world turning. This book helps show how different groups of people can clash but it also shows how they can mend the bond. In the book, Starr has a white boyfriend, Chris, and he really steps up to the plate and helps her throughout this journey. He learns what it is like for her as a Black American. Everyone in the book learns something about themselves, their loved ones, or even the world. I think the reader does the same. Whether they can relate to the book personally or can just simply understand what the characters are going through, everyone can learn from this book. I know I definitely learned more about how my words impact people and how my words have the power to truly change the world. And it is for that reason I recommend this book to anybody and everybody who is willing to unlearn some social norms and learn more about the world and themselves.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Books are the closest thing us mortals have to time travel. They transport us to the past, far away lands, and places only imagination could create. Books have the power to change the world and BookTok has definitely helped. Through BookTok I have been recommended some really great books. The first book I have been influenced by was "Turtles All The Way Down." This is a must read and should be on everyone's book shelf. The author, John Green, does an amazing job of taking us through the journey of the character, Aza, as she struggles with OCD and Anxiety. It also is a thrilling mystery with a heart warming love story.
The second book on the list is "The Song Of Achilles." While this book was not my favorite of all time as it is not really my preferred genre, I know many people who love this book. I quite enjoyed the LGBT representation it provided and how deep it went into the love story. It was definitely thrilling and made me more interesting in Mythology. I am thankful BookTok recommended this to both me and my friends as it has sparked lively discussions on our own identities and how we connect to the characters.
The third book I saw on BookTok that is a must read is "We Were Liars." This book is absolutely magnificent. I read this book after seeing it on BookTok and I needed something to read for a summer assignment. I was pleasantly surprised how amazing this book truly is. I wish I could read it for the first time again. This book is a thrilling mystery that only makes sense at the end. I was shook to the core because of how haunting the ending is. I could not fathom how it was possible for all the clues to be right there and I missed them all. It was truly just so brilliant how the Author, E. Lockhart, crafted such a story. Without BookTok I would never have picked up this book. I am so glad I did and I would add this to any bookshelf.
Further, I was recommended an awesome book many people are very familiar with. "The Hate U Give" is one of the best books I have ever read and I would love to be able to read it again for the first time. I loved this book as it put the world into perspective in an amazing light. The characters are so well done and the plot is to die for. It is truly a terrific book and I can't put it into words how much I love this book. I am so glad BookTok recommended this to me.
The final book I want to mention is "They Both Die at the End." This book is amazingly haunting and really puts life into perspective. This book follows two boys, Mateo and Rufus, who find out they are dying that day. In their world people are notified the day before they die that they are going to die. These boys are both extremely young and still figuring themselves out when they get this dreaded message. They find each other on an app designed for those who are dying to find a friend. Little do they know this friendship will quickly turn into love. The two boys fall in love with each other and for a moment I truly believed they were not going to die now that they found each other. The LGBT representation was nice to see being recommended by so many on the internet.
